This is a book to treasure, a new classic. I absolutely loved it. Set in Germany in the years 1939-1943, The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel, narrated by Death who has in his possession the book she wrote about these years.
-Death, Part Eight (413) I found this quote to be situational irony and to also spark a question in my own mind. It is almost humorous that a doctor, of all people, would be the one to catch a cold. "He lay with yellow hair and close eyes, and the book thief ran toward him and fell down. She dropped the black book. He speaks of hope during the beginning of the novel, but there is no hope in this part. I also think that by leaving Liesel to live while everyone else dies is a metaphor for death itself.

The book itself though is narrated by death, and of course when you realize that, you expect the novel to be quite morbid and dark. But it's not. Although there are darkish parts to the novel (after all it is set in the war times) the narrator, death, almost seems to have a cheery sort of atmosphere.
Irony in the Book Thief. 6/18/2015 Her career as a Book Thief is the opposite of what you would think it would be. Instead of being a thief that is well-equipped in the German language, you get a poorly educated teenager in the middle of a world war that is given books.
