Review of “Black-Eyed Susans” by Julia Heaberlin Posted on 07/22/2016 by rhapsodyinbooks This is a serial-killer thriller that is a bit unusual in that it begins after the serial killings end, and we really never hear (thankfully) the gory details of how the serial killings were accomplished.
The fire also carved out our grave, an uneven, loping ditch. Black-eyed Susans sprung up and decorated it brazenly long before we arrived. The Susans are a greedy plant, often the first to thrive in scorched, devastated earth. Pretty, but competitive, like cheerleaders. They like to crowd out the others.
Why did I read this book? I had read the author’s previous book, “Black-Eyed Susans” and enjoyed it very much. Secondly, I read a rather favorable review in the Washington Post that, while warning of slow going through much of the story, claimed it ends with a climax akin to being t-boned by an 18-wheeler.

The ending of My Sister's Keeper is surprising and terribly sad. Without giving too much away, can you share why you choose to end the novel this way? Was it your plan from the beginning, or did this develop later on, as you were writing? My Sister's Keeper is the first.

The premise of "Paper Ghosts" is an original and imaginative one, it grabbed me from the synopsis and continued to captivate me throughout the book. I particularly enjoyed the tagline - "My sister disappeared.

“A Book for Black-Eyed Susan” by Judy Young was a beautiful book in my opinion. The contemporary aspect of it made the reading flow and want you to keep reading more. It started off with a heart wrenching problem that affected my emotions. It lead to another problem that needed attention.
She captures the era and atmosphere from the first page, and those descriptions - wow. I was so pleasantly surprised by this entry I could write pages on it. L.L. SANDERS Bloodroots Black-Eyed Susans is a well-written psychological thrill ride that begins with a flare of the romantic poetic, but soon spirals toward the dark twisted.
My verdict Black-Eyed Susans started off slowly but turned into a gripping and creepy psychological thriller. Tessa has never fully recovered from her narrow escape from a serial killer.

Still not planning on talking twincest with my kid. My son is mature enough to not take to heart sexism or racism in reading. It was more embarrassing to me to realize that something I enjoyed and even recommended was so obviously against my personal feelings as an adult. I appreciate the concern, but this is more my issue.
When the wagons stop later on, Cora is given a chance to hold her baby sister who has black eyes and reminds her of a black-eyed Susan. These were her late mother's favorite flowers, so the name Susan sticks. Cora is inspired to begin a quilt book because she knows that Susan will not remember her mother.
I finished this book in about 4 days, I literally couldn’t put it down I was addicted, I always wanted to know what was going to happen to Tessa, what actually happened to Tessie. The ending had me scratching my head a little bit but I think that’s what the author wanted, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If I could read it again, I would.

Black eyed Susan (a colourful flower) does not fit into a solemn garden I can see it with the name though it's a great title, I wouldn't change it but gardens (and the flowers themselves) are hardly solemn. If you want me to believe his garden was solemn you'd have to work a little harder there.
