Strout’s previous novels, “Abide With Me” and “Amy and Isabelle,” were also set in New England and explored similar themes: family dynamics, small-town gossip, grief. Those books were good; this one is better. It manages to combine the sustained, messy investigation of the novel with the flashing insight of the short story.

In fact, there is not one shallow stereotype in the entire cast. Her descriptive powers pack a potent wallop. The plot is leisurely, and properly so: a breathlessly fast-paced plot would do a disservice to the subtle personality studies and transformations in ABIDE WITH ME. The story's conclusion is both completely unexpected and utterly.
This book touched me deeply. I have read it twice and each time I was moved to tears by Tyler s quiet grief and his congregation s lack of compassion to him and his child. The book was a stark reminder that we cannot know other s pain until we abide with them. Betsy Holland.

What an emotional rollercoaster ride and what an outstanding book! I went from laughing to tearing up to gasping in shock. Abide With Me is partly coming-of-age story and partly crime fiction. Although not a Young Adult book, kids could learn a lot from it. It is advertised as a story of football, friendship, hope and gangsters.

Despite the few choice portions of his book, it can not be overlooked that Harris is out- and-out ham handed in forcing plot elements to fit. One example is the aging of Nicole. In the previous books she was tender and luscious, but in Abide With Me she is aging and past her prime, (yet her male peer characters do not suffer.

But I had a good reason! A fellow blogger, Sherry from Semicolon, commented on my Olive Kitteridge post with a recommendation to read Abide with Me by Elizabeth Strout.
